Geography & History
Situated at the Foothills of the
Great Smokey Mountains, Blount County covers 584 square miles in the
extreme eastern portions of Tennessee. Blount county is situated
near the geographic center of the eastern United States with
approximately 50 percent of the U.S. population within a 500
mile radius. Blount County is one of the oldest counties in
Tennessee. Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smokey
Mountains National Park, it is surrounded by several impressive
lakes of the Tennessee Valley Authority. It was
established in 1795 when the territorial legislature separated a
part of Knox County. The new county was named in honor of
William Blount, Governor of the Territory of the United States
south of the Ohio River. Maryville which is named in honor of
William Blount's wife, Mary Grainger Blount, was authorized to
be "laid out" in 1795 with Scotch-Irish Presbyterian settlers
primarily from Virginia. Lumber was the first principal
industrial occupation of Blount county. The first lumber mill
was recorded in 1788. Today, there are over 100 manufacturing
plants distributed mostly within five industrial parks located
throughout the country. Blount County is home to the Aluminum
Company of America (ALCOA), and two of the area's newest
industries - Denso Manufacturing and Newell Products. Founded
in 1790, Maryville is the county seat of Blount County and
covers an area of 11.46 square miles. An area formerly known
as North Maryville was incorporated in 1919 and named Alcoa for
the founder of the city, Aluminum Co. of America. It covers 8.68
square miles. Together, the twin cities of Maryville and Alcoa
provided a scenic Gateway to the Great Smokey Mountains National
Park.
